DRL Flickering? 6 Common Causes and How to Fix LED Daytime Running Lights

DRL Flickering? 6 Common Causes and How to Fix LED Daytime Running Lights

The short answer

Flickering DRLs are almost always caused by a failing DRL LED board, a corroded connector, or a wiring/ground problem. In most cases the fix is a direct replacement board that matches the original module size.

1. Failing DRL LED board

The most common cause. One side flickers or goes dead while the other works. Fix: replace the board with a direct-fit unit - it plugs into the original connector in about 20-30 minutes.

2. Loose or corroded connector

Intermittent flicker often comes from a dirty or loose DRL connector. Fix: unplug, clean the contacts and reseat firmly.

3. Bad ground or fuse

If both sides flicker together, suspect a wiring or ground issue. Fix: check the ground strap and the DRL fuse before replacing parts.

4. Voltage instability

Aftermarket LED boards need a stable supply. A weak battery or charging issue can cause pulsing. Fix: check battery voltage and charging output.

5. Moisture in the housing

Condensation inside the headlight can short the DRL board. Fix: dry the housing and reseal it with headlamp sealant.

6. Wrong part for the vehicle

A board that does not match the original size or connector will not seat properly. Fix: verify fitment with our Shop by Vehicle tool before ordering.

When to just replace the board

If cleaning the connector and checking the fuse do not help, replace the LED board. It is the fastest, most reliable fix for flickering DRLs.

FAQ

Q: Is a flickering DRL dangerous to drive on? A: The flicker itself does not stop the car, but in markets where DRLs are mandated a dark or intermittent light is a lighting defect that can fail a roadworthiness inspection. Flicker is also an early-stage failure - the section normally goes dark eventually. Q: Can a flickering LED board be repaired, or only replaced? A: The fault is usually cracked solder joints from heat cycling. Board-level repair is possible for a skilled electronics tech, but a replacement board costs a few dollars to tens of dollars and is plug-and-play, which is why replacement is the normal route. Q: My DRL flickers only in cold weather. Does that change the diagnosis? A: Temperature-sensitive flicker points at the solder joints or at a weakening driver module - both worsen as components age. Start with the left-right board swap test, then look at the module if the fault stays on one side.
